THERAPEUTIC FASTING
POLITICAL FASTING
RELIGIOUS FASTING
cures diseases but simply that it enables the organism to heal
himself.
The digestive system gets rest due to the absence of food and
therefore the whole digestive system undergoes a cleansing
process. The process of assimilation comes to standstill. The
membranous lining of the stomach and intestines which were
acting as sponges for absorption of food material are now
throwing away waste from the system. The sponge is being
squeezed to throw away toxins.
By autolysis , old cells are thrown out; stirred material are
digested and prepared for a new use . All these marvellous
process of metamorphosis takes place when one is fasting .
Sylvester Graham said all the morbid accumulation such as cysts
, tumours, abscesses etc. are rapidly diminished and often
wholly removed under severe and protected abstinence and
fasting. Tissues are lost in reverse order of their usefulness like
fat and morbid growths first and then other tissues. By autolysis,
the body digest tumours and utilizes the protein and other food
elements contained in them to nourish it's tissues.
FASTING DOES THE FOLLOWING:
It gives the vital organs complete rest.
IT stops the intake of foods that decompose in the intestines
and further poison the body.
It empties the digestive track and disposes of putrefactive
bacteria.
It gives the organs of eliminations an opportunity to catch
up with their work and promotes the eliminations.
It re-establishes normal physiological chemistry and normal
secretion.
IT promotes the breaking down and absorption of exduates,
effusion, deposits,” diseased “
Tissues and abnormal growths.
It restore a youthful conditions of the cell and tissues and
rejuvenated the body.
It permits the conservation and recanalization of energy .It
clears and strengthen the mind
It improves functions throughout the body.
Fasting helps the vital energy to remove the toxic matter
from blood and purify the system
dipped in cold water.
Requisites: Two thick cotton or linen cloths or large towels.
Water Temperature: Cold water, 18 to 24°C, or ice water, 0°C
wherever indicated.
Duration: Twenty minutes. May be prolonged in some conditions,
Procedure: The cloth should be folded into four folds and dipped
in cold water. Before application, it should be wrung well and
applied on the concerned part of the body. When the compress is
appeased continuously, it should be renewed frequently by using
two compresses alternately. The compress can be applied to the
head, neck. Chest, abdomen, spine or on any inflamed portion of
the body. When applied on the head, it should be pressed firmly
so that it is in contact with the scalp. The pillow should be
covered with a rubber sheet and towel. Similarly, when applied to
the abdomen, the patient’s bedding should be covered suitably.
Uses: Cold compress is used to regulate the blood circulation and
functions of the liver, spleen, stomach, kidneys, intestines, lungs,
brain, uterus, bladder and other internal organs. It is used to
control inflammatory conditions of these organs.
The cold compress is valuable in treating localised inflammatory
conditions, whether superficial or deep.
It can be advantageously employed in cases of fever. Repeated
application of the cold compress on the head lowers the
temperature. The cold compress applied over the area of the
heart reduces palpitation and also helps in lowering the
temperature of the blood as it passes through the heart and
lungs. Cold compress over the face and the upper spine stops
nose bleeding. This also helps stop bleeding in case of piles and
Haemorrhage in the above mentioned organs.
It can also be applied by using an ice bag to stop bleeding in any
internal organ and from external wounds. In case of severe
vomiting, the ice bag may be applied over the stomach.
The cold compress cools the skin in Dermatitis and relieves
inflammation of external portions of the eye. When the eye ball
is affected, the cold compress should be applied after a short
fomentation.
HIP BATH
Hip bath is given at cold, neutral, hot and alternate temperatures
in a special hip bathtub.
COLD HIP BATH
Requisites: Hip bathtub, a moderately coarse cloth (the size of a
handkerchief).
Water Temperature: Cold, 18 to 24°C.
Duration: Fifteen minutes, unless otherwise indicated.
Procedure: The tub should be filled with cold water, enough to
cover the hips and reaching up to the navel of the patient, when
he sits in it. Generally, four to six gallons of water are necessary. If
the patient feels chill or when the climate is very cold or if the
patient 1s very weak, a hot foot bath should be given along with
the cold hip bath. The patient should gently rub the abdomen,
around the navel, in clockwise direction, with the coarse, wet
cloth. This should be continued during the entire period of the
bath. It is important that the legs, feet and the upper part of the
body are thoroughly dry and do not get wet during and after the
bath. Wear shoes before entering the bath. After the cold hip
bath, the patient should undertake moderate exercises like brisk
walking, yogasanas, suryanamaskaras, etc. If he is very weak, he
should lie down in bed and be covered with a blanket.
Uses: A cold hip bath is a routine treatment for almost all
diseases. The treatment is meant to relieve Constipation,
Indigestion, and Obesity and to help the eliminative organs to
function properly. This bath is also helpful in sub involution of
the uterus, inflammation of the pelvic organs, Piles, hepatic and
splenic congestion, Urinary Incontinence in young children,
chronic uterine infections, chronic congestion of the prostate,
seminal weakness, atony of bladder in both sexes, impotency,
sterility, and dilation of the stomach and colon.
Contraindication: Avoid in cases of inflammation and neuralgias
of pelvic and abdominal organs, in painful contractions of the
bladder, rectum or vagina, low back pain, during menstrual
period, Diarrhoea, Dysentery and Fever.
